Redmond Taking Part in All Drills at 49ers Practice

SANTA CLARA – Rookie cornerback Will Redmond is eligible to be moved onto the 49ers’ 53-man roster for Sunday’s game, but the organization appears likely to delay that move until next week.

On Oct. 18, the 49ers opened the 21-day practice window for Redmond to come off the injured reserve list. He has taken part in limited practices while not occupying a spot on the team’s active roster. The game Sunday against the New Orleans Saints is the first time the 49ers could choose to play him.

“Will’s not limited in terms of what he’s doing drill-wise or work-wise,” 49ers coach Chip Kelly said on Thursday.

Redmond has seen practice time in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, Kelly said. The only limitations placed on Redmond have been when he has needed a break due to his conditioning.

“There’s been a couple of times where, ‘Hey, Will needed a little bit of a blow here just because he’s not ready to go 12 straight plays in a row,’” Kelly said. “So it’s more of a conditioning thing from this point in time.”

The 49ers placed Redmond, a third-round draft pick from Mississippi State, on injured reserve after the initial cut to 53 players to allow him to continue to rehab from a torn ACL that ended his college career.

The 49ers must make a move by Tuesday whether to promote him to the 53-man roster or keep him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
