Smith, Staley on 49ers' Practice Field With Trade Deadline Looming

SANTA CLARA – Less than 2 ½ hours before the NFL trade deadline, the two 49ers who are reportedly drawing interest from other teams were out on the practice field.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith and left tackle Joe Staley went out to the field for the team’s first practice since returning from the bye week. The 49ers (1-6) play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

Smith and Staley were reported last week to be among the 49ers players who could be dealt before the trade deadline (Tuesday, 1 p.m.). The Philadelphia Eagles were the team most connected to Smith, according to multiple reports.

CSNBayArea.com reported last week that the 49ers were not shopping Smith and no trades were anticipated. Eagles coach Doug Pederson last week said there was “no legitimacy” to reports of the trade talks.

Last Monday, 49ers coach Chip Kelly responded to the first reports that the team was seeking a first-round draft pick for Staley.

“No one’s ever talked to me (or had) discussions with me about Joe being traded,” Kelly said. “We need Joe here.

“I’m not in charge of the overall roster. I’ll give my weigh in and weigh in where everybody is. But my point to that thing is we’ve never had a conversation about that, and we talk about everything on a daily basis. That’s never come up.”
