Washington Signs Former 49ers Pro Bowl Safety

The Washington Redskins signed three-time Pro Bowl safety Donte Whitner and placed David Bruton on injured reserve.

Whitner has played 10 NFL seasons, most recently with the Cleveland Browns. The 31-year-old was released in April and said he turned down a contract offer from the Los Angeles Rams because he wanted a one-year deal.

Whitner played for the 49ers from 2011 to 2013, and made the Pro Bowl his last two seasons in San Francisco.

Jay Gruden says the team had to make roster decisions with a banged-up defense and opted to put Bruton on IR with the strong safety in the league's concussion protocol.
