Prospect Acquired in Doolittle Trade Among A's Youngsters Headed to AFL

Sheldon Neuse continues his rise through the A's organization.

Acquired from the Nationals in the trade that sent Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson east, Neuse started his A's career with High-A Stockton, a promotion from Low-A Hagerstown in the Washington system.

After hitting .386 with seven homers and 22 RBI in just 22 games with the Ports, Neuse was promoted to Double-A Midland. In 12 games with the Rockhounds, the 22-year-old third baseman is hitting .357 with three doubles and three RBI.

Now, once the 2017 regular season ends, Neuse will head to Mesa to participate in the Arizona Fall League.

Each major league team sends 5-6 players to the AFL. For some prospects, it's a reward for a successful season. For others, it's a chance to make up for time lost to injury during the regular season.

Neuse isn't the most highly touted A's prospect headed to the desert.

Right-handed pitcher Logan Shore and catcher Sean Murphy will join Neuse on the Mesa Solar Sox.

Shore, a second-round pick in 2016, is Oakland's No. 8 ranked prospect according to MLBPipeline.com. This season, in 16 appearances with Stockton, Shore has a 4.11 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 65.2 innings.

Murphy, taken one round after Shore last year, has split time between Stockton and Midland this season. In 92 games this season, Murphy is hitting .251/.309/.399 with 17 doubles, 11 home runs and 45 RBI.

Right-handed pitcher Miguel Romero and outfielder Tyler Ramirez round out the group of A's prospects headed to Arizona.

The Solar Sox are comprised of prospects from the A's, Astros, Nationals, Tigers and Cubs. Opening Day for the AFL is Oct. 10.
