Oakland Athletics third baseman Ryon Healy has been voted the American League Rookie of the Month for September.
Healy batted .355 (38-for-107) with 19 runs scored, nine doubles, seven home runs and 19 RBI to claim his first career monthly award, becoming the first Oakland player to take home rookie honors since Nate Freiman in May 2013. Among AL rookies with at least 20 at-bats, Healy finished the period first in runs scored, hits, doubles, extra-base hits (16) and slugging percentage (.636); second in batting average and RBI; tied for second in home runs; and fourth in on-base percentage (.389).
From September 10th-19th, Oakland’s third round selection in the 2013 MLB Draft posted a 10-game hitting streak, which saw him bat .452 (19-for-42) with 13 runs scored, four doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI. Within his impressive streak, the righthanded-hitting third baseman posted four consecutive multi-hit games from September 12th-15th, while logging two round-trippers and seven RBI. The A’s went 6-4 during Healy’s hot stretch at the plate.
Healy’s 10-game hitting streak was the second-longest of his career behind a streak of 14 games from August 13th-28th earlier this season. Additionally, the 24-year-old rookie recorded an extra-base hit in four straight contests from September 25th-28th. During this stretch, Healy batted .600 (9-for-15) with four doubles, a home run and four RBI. On September 30th against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, the West Hills, California native belted his 13th home run of the season in his 70th career game. That is tied for fourth-most in Oakland history among players to appear in fewer than half of the A’s regular season games (80 games-or-fewer). Jose Canseco holds the club record with 17 homers in 65 games in 1989, while Geronimo Berroa (16 home runs in 73 games in 1997) and Chris Carter (16 home runs in 67 games in 2012) are tied for second. Healy, who made his Major League debut on July 15th, batted .305 (82-for-269) during his rookie campaign, the highest mark among qualified AL rookies.
Others receiving votes for AL Rookie of the Month included Edwin Diaz (3.38 ERA, 7 SV, 10.2 IP, 15 SO) and Ariel Miranda (4-1, 2.62 ERA, 34.1 IP, 26 SO) of the Mariners; Byron Buxton (.277, 19 R, 26 H, 7 HR) of the Minnesota Twins; Gary Sanchez (13 R, 22 H, 9 HR, 21 RBI) of the New York Yankees; Chris Devenski (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 15.0 IP, 21 SO) of the Houston Astros; and Tim Anderson (.291, 15 R, 5 2B, 3 3B) of the Chicago White Sox.
