A's to Dedicate Statue of Hall of Famer at Coliseum Next Season

The A's will dedicate a statue of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson at the Coliseum for next season, a team spokesperson confirmed to NBC Sports California.

The exact date of the unveiling will be announced as the 2018 season gets closer, but the statue is another tribute to the major leagues' all-time stolen base and runs leader. The playing surface at the Coliseum was named Rickey Henderson Field before this season, and that honor will carry over into the A's planned new ballpark near downtown Oakland, scheduled for opening in 2023.

The A's have made increased efforts this season to spotlight some of the greats throughout their history. They've renamed two of the entrance gates to the Coliseum after Hall of Fame pitchers Catfish Hunter and Dennis Eckersley.

Earlier this year, Henderson and Eckersley both were named special assistants to A's president Dave Kaval. Henderson has been visible around the Coliseum often this season; Eckersley's time is more limited due to his broadcasting duties with the Boston Red Sox.

The Coliseum's Joint Powers Authority needed to grant final approval for the Henderson statue, and that came during Friday's board meeting. The A's will dedicate a statue of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson at the Coliseum for next season, a team spokesperson confirmed to NBC Sports California.
