Becoming Father Gives A's Pitcher Brett Anderson New Life Perspective

OAKLAND -- For as long as he can remember, Brett Anderson's entire world revolved around baseball. That all changed Monday.

Anderson's wife, Morgan, gave birth to the couple's first child, a son named Brody. Both mom and baby are healthy and resting comfortably in Phoenix, where Anderson makes his home in the offseason.

"Thirty-one years of living, breathing, dying with baseball kind of goes out the window now with a newborn," Anderson said with a smile.

The A's left-hander went on the paternity list during the team's trip to Houston earlier this week. He rejoined the club on Thursday to start the series opener against the Texas Rangers.

While Anderson's outing didn't go well -- he allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings -- it was hard for him to be too upset about it.

"Obviously, you'd like to win a ballgame and pitch better to give your team a chance," Anderson said. "But at the end of the day, things change when you have a kid and you're not the only one you're relying on."

Anderson admits he was a little tired when he took the mound for the first time as a father, but the lack of sleep has been completely worth it.

"It's been kind of a whirlwind," he said. "I felt a little rusty. ... The last couple of days, it was more so feeding a newborn and changing diapers and doing that every three or four hours. But I wouldn't change it for the world."

Despite Thursday's loss, Anderson is putting together his best season since 2015 with a 9-6 record and a 4.05 ERA. And now, he has a brand-new inspiration to pitch for.
