Sean Doolittle Knew Trade Was Coming, But Still ‘in Shock a Little Bit'

OAKLAND -- Sean Doolittle had seen the trade rumors, but then again there are always rumors involving A's players this time of year.

Then he got called into manager Bob Melvin's office at about 10 a.m., also not that unusual in itself.

Then, "I looked in the corner and (GM) David (Forst) was sitting in the corner, so I knew what was coming," Doolittle said.

Doolittle and fellow reliever Ryan Madson were packaged in a trade to the Washington Nationals on Sunday morning for right-handed reliever Blake Treinen, infield prospect Sheldon Neuse and left-handed pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo..

Madson left the Coliseum without addressing reporters. Doolittle admitted the moment was "surreal",  and A's teammates were just hearing the news themselves as the media's clubhouse access period began. Daniel Gossett, Ryan Dull and other pitchers came over to offer hugs and handshakes. Madson was occasionally spotted making his way around the building, collecting his belongings.

Doolittle was the longest tenured Athletic, a first baseman-turned-pitcher who was an All-Star in 2014 and, like former A's catcher Stephen Vogt, a fan favorite.

"I guess I'm in shock a little bit," Doolittle said. "That doesn't mean I'm not really excited."
