The Giants added depth to their middle infield down on the farm with a slick-fielding shortstop recently placed on waivers by the Twins.

On Thursday, San Francisco reportedly claimed 23-year-old Engelb Vielma off waivers. The news was first reported by Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press and confirmed by Darren Wolfson of KSTP News.

Vielma, 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, hit .286 in 34 games at Double-A this season but then struggled mightily after a promotion to Triple-A. In 87 games facing Triple-A competition, Vielma put together a lowly slash line of .206/.233/.260.

Over six seasons in the Twins' minor league system, Vielma is a career .256 hitter.

After the 2016 season, Baseball America ranked Vielma as the Twins' No. 25 overall prospect and MLB Pipeline saw the young infielder as the team's No. 22 prospect.
