Giants' Offense Posts Historic Numbers to Start Doubleheader Vs. Rockies

DENVER -- By the fourth inning Monday, the locals had seen enough. The Rockies' broadcast used a telestrator to draw white squiggly lines over the score graphic, and that continued through the next inning.

At the time, it was 13-0 Giants. By the end of the first game of a doubleheader the Giants had won 19-2. They had 21 hits.

This was, as you might have guessed, a historic day for a Giants lineup that entered Monday last in the National League with a .231 batting average. The Giants had 11 hits and 11 runs off Rockies starter German Marquez, who nearly no-hit them earlier this season but didn't make it out of the third inning. They scored 12 runs in the first three innings for the first time in a decade.

Here are some other offensive highlights from the latest explosion:

--- It cannot be overstated. A few weeks ago the Giants were on track to be one of the worst lineups in MLB history. Now this is basically the hottest San Francisco Giants lineup of all-time:

The Giants would tack on four more after that tweet. Who are these guys?

--- The 19 runs are the most the Giants have ever scored at Coors Field and the most since they scored 19 against the Dodgers in 2013. That was the day when Hunter Pence drove in seven runs and Brandon Belt drove in six at Dodger Stadium.

--- Through his first four at-bats, Brandon Crawford had two homers, two singles and six RBI. That tied his career-high for runs driven in and gave him his fourth career multi-homer game, and it was only the sixth inning. The second homer was a moonshot and went an estimated 443 feet. That's Crawford's longest since Statcast began tracking in 2015.

Crawford came up one more time in the ninth with the bases loaded and bounced a two-run single up the middle off Mark Reynolds, usually a first baseman. He tied the San Francisco Giants record with eight RBI in one game, matching Orlando Cepeda and Willie Mays. That's pretty good company.

Crawford finished with five hits and raised his batting average by 13 points and his OPS by 41 points in one game.

--- Mike Yastrzemski was three-quarters of the way to the cycle through four at-bats. He homered in the first, doubled in the third and singled in the sixth. This is the place to get a triple, but Yastrzemski wouldn't complete the act. He reached on an infield single in the eighth and then flied out against Reynolds in the ninth.

--- Every starting position player but Pablo Sandoval had a hit by the third inning, and seven different players finished with multiple hits. The lefties in the heart of the lineup -- Alex Dickerson, Crawford and Yastrzemski -- combined to go 12-for-17 and score 10 runs.

--- That 12-run performance mentioned up top came at home against the Astros in 2009. The last time the Giants scored 12-plus runs in the first three innings on the road? According to Stats, LLC, you have to go all the way back to 1993, when they led the Phillies 13-0 and eventually won 15-8.

--- Again, how unlikely is all this? The Giants started the day having been outscored by 63 runs this season, the second-worst run differential in the NL. By the end of this series they might be back to even. Stay tuned.
