Giants Loading Up Taxi Squad in Case of Bumgarner, Reliever Trades

PHILADELPHIA -- The Giants have kept their cards close in recent days, but they have at least gotten far enough down the line in discussions that they're preparing for serious roster upheaval.

Relievers Sam Selman and Ray Black and starter Andrew Suarez are among the players headed to the East Coast to be on the taxi squad, NBC Sports Bay Area has learned. Right-handers Jandel Gustave and Melvin Adon are also likely to be on the taxi squad. The Giants continue to discuss Madison Bumgarner and their collection of relievers with other teams, and they wanted to be prepared just in case multiple veterans come off the roster after Wednesday's 4 p.m. Eastern deadline. They play the Phillies three hours later.

Selman, a lefty who has had a very strong season in Triple-A, could serve as a roster replacement for either Will Smith or Tony Watson. Black has been up and down already this season and would add right-handed depth if the Giants trade a Sam Dyson or Reyes Moronta. Adon is with nearby Double-A Richmond and is an option to come up this week, along with Gustave, who was recently put on the 40-man roster.

The Giants have not yet come close to pulling the trigger on a Bumgarner deal, but they wanted to be prepared just in case, and Suarez could be a short-term fill-in for the rotation. The likelihood remains that it is a reliever who gets dealt, though.
