Giants Notes: Bochy Analyzes Game 1 Loss to Cubs in NLDS

CHICAGO -- In his first postseason, two decades ago, Bruce Bochy was surprised by the magnified "Why this? Why that?" nature of every postgame session.

"Every pitch, every play, it's going to be analyzed," Bochy said Saturday.

That's not limited to fans and the media. Bochy went back and looked at key plays from a 1-0 loss in Game 1, and he was disappointed by one in particular: The check-swing call on Gorkys Hernandez in the ninth.

"It hurt, it really did," Bochy said. "Sometimes you think, well, you're biased, it's your guy. But when I looked at it later, he didn't go. It happened so fast. It was loud. I wasn't surprised, although I didn't think he went. We didn't think he went. Part of this game is getting the calls, too, and the ball bouncing your way. They got the call."

Bochy said he wishes that call would be reviewable, although that certainly would be complicated.

There were also a couple of big plays that had nothing to do with the umpires. Bochy said he did not think Buster Posey would have scored on the Ben Zobrist mistake, even if he would have gone full speed around second.

"They got the ball in pretty quick," Bochy said. "It didn't go that far past him. Buster is not one of our speed guys."

The Giants knew the Cubs had that Anthony Rizzo play in the back pocket. It was on scouting reports because the Cubs had pulled Rizzo in like that before, and Johnny Cueto was instructed to swing away. Conor Gillaspie just drifted too far.

--- Eduardo Nunez jogged the bases again Saturday afternoon. He looked about as hampered as he did Friday. Bochy said he liked the at-bat Nunez had, but it's clear he needs a pinch-runner.

"I'll be honest, watching him go down the line there, there's concern that he's not quite ready," Bochy said.

--- Most of the relievers have had at least a week off because of the Bumgarner-Cueto complete games and the work Ty Blach and Matt Moore did last weekend. It's a good thing to get depth from your starters. It's also a problem when pitchers get rusty. Bochy said they're all playing catch every day to stay loose, but there's not much else they can do.

"It's a little late to be playing a simulated game," Bochy said.

Jeff Samardzija, who hasn't started since the last Wednesday of the regular season, has also had a long layoff. The positive for the Giants is that the Cubs are in the same boat.
