Instant Analysis: Five Takeaways From Giants' Final First-half Loss

BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO -An unimaginably bad first half ended in an appropriate way.

A.J. Ellis took George Kontos deep in the top of the 11th inning and Giancarlo Stanton did the same. Ellis' homer was his first. Stanton got his 26th. It added up to a rally the Giants couldn't overcome in extra innings. They lost 10-8, ending the first half with a 34-56 record. A year ago at this time, they were 57-33.

The Giants trailed 7-3 after the top of the seventh but got a run back in that inning and came all the way back to tie it the next time up. They had five singles in a span of six at-bats in the eighth, the final one a Miguel Gomez single that gave the rookie a game-tying hit for his first big league knock. That was just a rare bright memory by the end.

Here are five more things to know from the last game before the All-Star break …

-- Johnny Cueto gave up six earned on six hits and six walks. He finished the first half with a 4.51 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. A year ago, when he started the All-Star Game, he was at 2.47 and 0.99.

-- Nick Hundley muscled up in the fifth and hit a solo shot to the arcade section in right. It was the 41st oppo homer at AT&T Park by a right-handed batter, and the second in this series. Giancarlo Stanton put one out there Friday night. Hundley joins Buster Posey and Hunter Pence as current Giants who have done it.

-- Brandon Crawford hit one out to the deepest part of the yard in the second, getting his eighth homer. It's been a rough first half for Crawford but he looks like he's locking in a little. He singled in the eighth-inning rally.

-- On his 26th birthday, Steven Okert was given a terrible gift. He was brought on with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh to face Justin Bour, who has 20 homers. Bour hit a two-run single.

-- Matt Cain entered in the eighth and made the eighth relief appearance of his career. He walked one, intentionally walked another, and then got an inning-ending fly.
