MLB Rumors: Cameron Maybin, Giants Finalizing Minor-league Contract

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - One day before position players report to camp, the Giants have added yet another one.

The club is finalizing a minor-league contract with veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin, according to The Athletic.

Maybin, 31, would be the second outfielder with big-league experience to join the mix this week. The Giants signed Gerardo Parra earlier in the week, and also added Yangervis Solarte, Stephen Vogt and Rene Rivera in recent days.

Maybin joins an outfield competition short on big-league experience. The Giants have been looking for a right-handed complement to Steven Duggar, and Maybin could be a fit there, albeit an imperfect one.

Maybin has a .660 OPS against left-handers in his career and had more success against right-handers last season while playing for the Marlins and the Mariners. He is, however, a strong defender in center, and provides some insurance in case Duggar is slowed. The Giants lack center field depth, with Rule 5 pick Drew Ferguson and Parra currently behind Duggar.

Maybin figures to be one of the last non-roster additions. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said Friday that he doesn't want to add too much more because he wants young players to have a realistic shot and veterans to get the opportunity that was promised.

As for the elephant in the room, Maybin doesn't impact the Bryce Harper talks at all. The Giants planned to add two veteran outfielders long before they jumped back in on Harper. If he decides to come to San Francisco, no move that's made this month will get in the way of that.
