The Giants continued to upgrade their infield Wednesday.
Just after the MLB trade deadline passed, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reported that the Reds had dealt infielder Scooter Gennett to the Giants.

The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reported moments later that the Giants will send a player to be named later back to the Reds for Gennett.

Gennett hit .212/232/.258 with three doubles and five RBI in 20 games with the Reds. The 29-year-old was named to his only All-Star team last season, when he hit .310 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI.
The Gennett acquisition completes a busy day for Farhan Zaidi and the Giants. Relievers Drew Pomeranz and Ray Black were traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for top prospect Mauricio Dubon, while Mark Melancon was dealt to the Atlanta Braves and Sam Dyson was traded to the Minnesota Twins.
The Giants didn't trade the chips everyone believed they would move, as ace Madison Bumgarner and relievers Will Smith and Tony Watson stayed in San Francisco. But if Gennett can return to his All-Star form, he could provide an upgrade at second base over Joe Panik and platoon with Donovan Solano.
