MLB Rumors: Giants Interested in Astros Prospect for Madison Bumgarner

The Giants have been perhaps the hottest team in baseball during July, but they now have lost three of their last five games entering Wednesday's MLB trade deadline.

With hours to go before the 1 p.m. deadline, the Giants appear to have shifted into sell mode. MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported Wednesday morning that San Francisco is having "sell" conversations with their pitchers.

Longtime ace and former playoffs hero Madison Bumgarner remains at the top of the list regarding arms the Giants could sell. Yahoo's Tim Brown reported Tuesday that the Giants and Astros are "engaged" in trade talks for Bumgarner. One day later, we might know who president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and the rest of the Giants' front office have their eyes on in Houston.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Wednesday morning that sources have told him the Giants are interested in Astros Triple-A infielder Joshua Rojas, who is ranked as Houston's No. 22 prospect by MLB.com. From an outside perspective, receiving a lower prospect for MadBum might not sound too ideal, but the Giants could view Rojas higher than other evaluators.

Rojas, 25, is more of a do-it-all utility man than anything else. Zaidi values versatility and that's exactly what this prospect brings. The left-handed hitter has played every position this season aside from catcher and center field. He's also broken out at the plate this season.

Between Double-A and Triple-A, Rojas is hitting .315 with 20 home runs and a .978 OPS. He's also stolen 32 bases.

While Rojas isn't the top prospect Giants fans covet in a potential Bumgarner trade, he could help the big league club right away in multiple roles.
