Maddon: If Giants Pitching Hot Like 2015 Mets, Not Much Cubs Can Do

In the NLCS last year, the Mets swept the Cubs.

The final scores of the four games -- 4-2, 4-1, 5-2, 8-3.

“Their pitching was unbelievably good,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon told reporters recently. “That’s it. I’m not trying to be smart in any way. They were just good. They just pitched that well.

"You would hope to not run into that same method of pitching among the entire group. I was part of that also with the Angels against the White Sox in 2005 – their pitching was absolutely phenomenal."

The Cubs will face the Giants in Game 1 of the NLDS on Friday night, and San Francisco's starting staff is on a hot streak.

Madison Bumgarner (who is expected to start Game 3 on Monday in San Francisco) threw a complete game shutout in New York in the Wild Card Game.

Johnny Cueto will be on the mound in Game 1, and he went 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA over his final five starts of the season.

Matt Moore recorded two wins and a 1.15 ERA over his last two starts, and Jeff Samardzija registered a 1.37 ERA over his final three outings.

“When you run into hot pitching like that, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it," Maddon said. "There’s no lesson to be learned, I don’t think. You just hope that the team you run into is not that hot with their pitching."
