Madison Bumgarner Exits Giants Game Early After Being Hit by Line Drive

The last image of Madison Bumgarner pitching at Oracle Park as a Giant could be of him walking off the mound with trainer Dave Groeschner. 

Bumgarner walked back to the home dugout after throwing his warmup pitches prior to third inning Saturday night in San Francisco. He completed just two innings of work in what could be his last home start before the July 31 trade deadline. 

Cardinals right fielder Jose Martinez, the second batter Bumgarner had faced, crushed a line drive with an exit velocity of 98.3 mph right back at Bumgarner in the top of the first inning. The liner nailed the big left-hander right above the elbow on his throwing arm.

After consulting with Groeschner and manager Bruce Bochy, and testing out his arm, Bumgarner stayed in the game. But he only lasted two innings before being taken out. Bumgarner allowed four hits and one earned run over two innings while striking out two batters. 

Soon after staying in the game, Bumgarner made history. The next batter, he struck out shortstop Paul DeJong to move past Tim Lincecum for the second-most strikeouts in the Giants' San Francisco era. He now has 1,706 career strikeouts.

If the Giants keep their same rotation after the All-Star break, Bumgarner would only have one home start left before the trade deadline.
