LOS ANGELES -- Bruce Bochy made the trip up to the Dodger Stadium press box on Wednesday afternoon and spoke to Vin Scully for about 15 minutes, so the legendary broadcaster was probably the first to know the diagnosis on Johnny Cueto. The news was good and bad for the Giants.
An MRI confirmed a Grade 1 strain, which is mild, but Cueto will still miss about a week. The Giants have not officially ruled Cueto out for Sunday's scheduled start in San Diego, but there's virtually no chance he faces the Padres. Matt Cain, Jake Peavy and Ty Blach are the candidates to take that game, along with "Johnny Wholestaff." The history here says a veteran will get the first crack, but there are some in the organization who would love to see Blach get an extended look. It makes sense given that the Padres are playing all prospects, and Blach dominated the Pacific Coast League.
As for the other injured star, Brandon Crawford said he's more sore today than he was yesterday, but that's to be expected. It would frankly be a surprise to see him before the weekend, but Crawford said he'll be checked every day and he'll be back in there as soon as he's cleared.
With Crawford out, Ehire Adrianza starts alongside Eduardo Nuñez, who got bumped down in the order despite being just about the only offense through two games here at Dodger Stadium. Why?
"I wanted to break the lefties up, too," Bochy said of moving Denard Span back up to the leadoff spot. "You look at (Kenta Maeda's) numbers and lefties have had a little more success off this guy. I wanted to balance the lineup."
--- Bochy on meeting Scully: "It was a great visit. It's an honor to go up and pay my respects and tell him how much I appreciated it when he used to pay me visits (in the clubhouse). You see where he does his magic. You're standing there and looking at the field and appreciating what he's done and for how long. I was telling him about all my memories, and he's got 67 years of them."
Jake Peavy and Jeff Samardzija also made the trip to see Scully. How often do you see big leaguers this starstruck?
