SAN FRANCISCO -- There was no waiting around this time, not with the way Austin Slater had to be helped off the field Friday night. A day after Slater pulled up on his way to first the Giants put the rookie left fielder on the disabled list and recalled outfielder Mac Williamson from Triple-A Sacramento.
Slater was taken out of Friday night's loss in the eighth inning after feeling pain in his right leg as he approached first base on a grounder. Slater had earlier dealt with irritation in the hip and he had been getting treatment in recent days. The Giants are officially calling this a right groin strain. He had an MRI on Saturday morning, and while results were not available at the time of the roster move, Slater was said to be in much better spirits.
Williamson was supposed to at some point run with the left field job the way Slater has, but injuries derailed his season from the start. The 26-year-old returned to the big leagues in May but hit just .161 before being sent down. In Sacramento, Williamson was batting .238 in 49 games with nine homers.
