Tyler Beede Matches Slugging Teammates With Best Outing of Career

SAN DIEGO -- Tyler Beede smiled and shook his head. It had been a career night, and yet, there was a blemish. The Giants had 17 hits in a third straight offensive explosion, but Beede was hitless in four at-bats, striking out all four times.

"Man, hitting is hard," he said, laughing. "I got up and struck out every time and then got to the mound and went, 'hitting is not that easy, so I should go after these guys.'"

Beede made life just as difficult for the Padres who stepped in against him, scattering four hits and walking none in what certainly goes down as his sharpest start in the big leagues. The Giants won 10-4, their young right-hander allowing just one earned.

"That's his best outing," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Beede agreed, and he was happy that he was able to keep his aggressive streak going. He has tried to go after hitters in recent starts, and his previous one was a good one. With the Giants breaking out the bats and giving him a big early lead, Beede kept pouring his fastball, curveball and changeup into the strike zone.

"He stayed away from walks and didn't hurt himself," Bochy said. "We're trying to get these guys to pound the strike zone. That got better as the game went. He got in a nice groove there."

Beede now will face a new challenge: Trying to stay in that groove. His season has been an inconsistent one, but the last two starts show the talent and poise that should keep him in the rotation throughout the second half. It could be a long wait until he can try to keep the momentum going, though. Tuesday's start was Beede's final one of the first half, and with the All-Star break coming, there's a chance Beede doesn't take a mound again until July 15 or 16 in Colorado.

The young right-hander wasn't worried about any rust. When he pitched at Petco Park last year he got shelled, and he wouldn't make another big league appearance. This time around, Beede showed he belongs. The rest is out of his hands for a couple of weeks as the Giants set their rotation coming out of the break.

"I'm up for whatever they have in mind," he said.
