SAN FRANCISCO - In recent days, Hunter Pence has filled his social media pages with short clips and photos from grueling offseason workouts. He took a brief break, though, to help with a little recruiting.
The Giants are waiting to see if Giancarlo Stanton will waive his no-trade clause and accept a trade to San Francisco, and Pence chimed in Tuesday by sending out a post asking Stanton if he could imagine combining powers. Stanton was among the more than 10,000 people to like the tweet. A couple of Cardinals have also taken to social media to reach out to Stanton and outfielder Dexter Fowler responded to Pence's post by writing, "not sure that's good job security for you."
Fowler is technically correct. Pence has patrolled right field since being traded from Philadelphia in 2012, but that would be Stanton's spot for the next decade if a trade happens. So why become one of two Giants -- along with Cory Gearrin -- to recruit Stanton on social media?
"Obviously I am here to help win any way possible, bottom line," Pence said on Wednesday.
That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone familiar with his Giants career. It's unclear what the team would do with the outfield going forward if Stanton does accept a deal. Pence and Denard Span are both in contract years and Span has already been told that he's moving to left field. It's possible there would be a platoon, or some kind of timeshare involving multiple positions, but that's something to be worked out if a trade happens. For now, the Giants continue to wait.
