The Raiders haven't named Jon Gruden their next coach. Yet.

That's expected soon, likely early next week. That hasn't stopped speculation about assistants around the league joining Gruden in Oakland.

Defensive coordinator is a particularly important position, considering Gruden's offensive background and the fact he would call plays.

The next defensive coordinator will install a new system and new philosophies that fit some players better than others. That's crucial in Gruden's vision for this football team.

Paul Guenther has been attached to that spot, and he'll be available this offseason. The Bengals defensive coordinator's contract expires soon, and will reportedly leave the team he has worked for since 2005.

ESPN reports that Guenther would be the leading candidate to be Gruden's defensive coordinator.

Guenther was Bengals defensive coordinator the past four seasons, but decided to leave after Marvin Lewis agreed to a new two-year contract to remain Bengals head coach. Guenther was considered a quality internal option if Lewis didn't come back.

Guenther is a respected defensive mind who could quickly join the Raiders staff, though he could have other options should he choose to explore them.

The Raiders feature edge rushers Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin, though the teams needs upgrades at several key spots.

The Bengals were a middle of the road defense last year, though they had the No. 8 ranked pass defense.
