Instant Replay: Burns, Sharks Bury Coyotes With Win in Overtime

SAN JOSE – Brent Burns scored early in overtime to lift the Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Coyotes on Tuesday at SAP Center.

The defenseman hammered a one-timer past Mike Smith just 19 seconds into the extra frame for his ninth of the season. The Sharks had one minute and 57 seconds left on a power play to start overtime, on Martin Hanzal’s high stick of Melker Karlsson at 19:57 of the third period.

San Jose finished 4-1 on its five-game homestand, and is 8-3-0 at home overall.

The Sharks won their fifth straight over Arizona at SAP Center, although they dropped the first two games of the season series with the Coyotes, both on the road.

Despite getting heavily outshot, the Coyotes opened the scoring with a goal in the second period. Radim Vrbata’s cross-ice pass found Max Domi, and the Arizona winger found room on Martin Jones’ short side at 7:19.

The Sharks continued to get plenty of pucks on Smith, but mainly from the perimeter. Chris Tierney’s tying goal came when he skated the puck from the corner to the crease, and was able to jam it through Smith at 15:29.

Mikkel Boedker, who was benched in the third period of Saturday’s game against the Ducks, recorded his first assist of the season on Tierney’s marker. It ended a 12-game scoring drought.

The Sharks held a 29-10 advantage in shots through two periods, and 42-19 for the game. Arizona went more than 11 minutes without a shot on goal in the opening frame.

There were no fights in the game, but there were several gatherings between the two teams that were facing one another for the third time this month. At the end of the second, Burns and Connor Murphy pushed and shoved, with the latter receiving a gloved right hook from the Sharks defenseman.

In the third, rookie Kevin Labanc and former Sharks forward Jamie McGinn had words, sparking a 10-man scrum that almost boiled over.

Smith made some key saves in the third to force overtime. He stopped Joel Ward’s rebound try with 4:20 to go, and then got his pad on a Patrick Marleau try in front of the net in the final minute.

Just one minute into the game, a Marleau goal was overturned when a coach’s challenge revealed Brenden Dillon was offsides.

The Sharks and Coyotes meet twice more this season, both in February.

Special teams:  The Sharks finished 1-for-2 on the power play, and are 4-for-15 in their past five games.

Arizona was 0-for-2, including a third period advantage with 7:29 left in regulation after Dillon’s interference minor.

In goal:  Starting for the sixth time in the last seven, Jones got the win with 18 saves. He has been in net for all three games against Arizona.

Smith, who made 43 saves in a 3-2 Coyotes overtime win against the Sharks on Nov. 19, stopped 40 of 42.

Lineup:  Karlsson returned after a seven-game absence with a left foot injury. To make room for him, Matt Nieto was scratched for the first time in eight games. Tommy Wingels missed his second straight game with a lower body injury.

Arizona lost Oliver Ekman-Larsson due to an upper body injury after the second period.

Up next:  The Sharks will face a well-rested and hot Kings team, which hasn’t played since last Saturday and has won its last five. San Jose downed the Kings in the season opener at SAP Center on Oct. 12, 2-1.
