Sharks' Schlemko, DeBoer Mum on Defenseman's Odd Benching

SAN JOSE – Neither coach Pete DeBoer nor David Schlemko was saying much about the defenseman's curious scratching from the lineup on Tuesday against Calgary.

Schlemko's removal came at a strange time, considering he's healthy. The 29-year-old posted his first goal and an assist on Friday in a win over Montreal, and didn't make any noticeable errors in Sunday's 4-1 loss in Chicago, either, in which San Jose was pleased with its effort against the NHL's top club.

Schlemko's 53.75 shot attempt percentage is tops among all Sharks defensemen, and he's been a mainstay on the second power play unit, too. In short, he's been a key part of a defense corps that has the Sharks allowing just 2.21 goals-per game, fifth in the NHL.

DeBoer was asked if he felt that Dylan DeMelo was simply a better fit against the Flames than Schlemko.

"No, I don't think it was that simple," he said. "You're splitting hairs, but [DeMelo] has played really well when he's gone in there. Did the same thing again last night."

When it was suggested to DeBoer that some sort of disciplinary reason might be to blame, he replied: "This is all coach's decision on roster."

Schlemko, who has eight points (1g, 7a) in 28 games, appeared to get a bit emotional when questioned by reporters after Wednesday's skate. He feels good about his game.

"I'm confident in what I can do and what I can bring, but end of the day it's coach's decision," he said.

And what was the message?

"I don't really want to comment," he said. "It was a coach's decision."

Schlemko was asked if he was surprised to come out of the lineup despite seemingly playing well lately.

"You know what, I'm kind turning the page," he said. "It's out of my hands. Move on from there."
