The Sharks have re-signed goalie Troy Grosenick to a two-year contract extension, the club announced on Monday.
Per a source, the contract is a two-way deal worth $650,000 at the NHL level both years.
The 27-year-old is coming off of a season in which he was named as the American Hockey League's top goaltender while playing for the San Jose Barracuda, posting 30 wins (second in the AHL), a .926 save percentage (second in the AHL) and 2.04 goals-against average (third in the AHL). He led the league with 10 shutouts, and was selected as a first team AHL all-star.
At the moment, Grosenick is third on the Sharks depth chart, behind starter Martin Jones and backup Aaron Dell. Dell is signed through the 2017-18 season.
Considering Dell was outstanding in his first NHL season as the backup, posting an 11-6-1 record, 2.00 GAA and .931 SP in 20 games, Grosenick provides the Sharks insurance in case Dell is selected by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft later this month. Each NHL team is permitted to protect one goalie, and in the Sharks' case, that will surely be Jones.
Grosenick has two games of NHL experience, both coming in the 2014-15 season. He became the first goalie in Sharks history to post a shutout in his NHL debut, with 45 saves in Carolina on Nov. 16, 2014.

A six-foot-one, 185-pound native of Wisconsin, Grosenick, who played three years at Union College, was originally signed by the Sharks as a free agent on April 3, 2013.
