SAN JOSE – The Sharks signed 23-year-old restricted free agent defenseman Dylan DeMelo to a two-year contract extension, they announced on Monday.
Financial terms were not immediately available, but CSN learned it is a two-way contract in 2016-17, and a one-way deal in 2017-18.
A former sixth round pick of the club in 2011, DeMelo had a breakthrough season in 2015-16, playing in 45 games with San Jose and establishing himself as a viable NHL defenseman after his NHL debut on Oct. 17 in Brooklyn. He finished the season with two goals and two assists for four points and an even rating.
DeMelo did not play at all during the Sharks' lengthy playoff run, as the Sharks enjoyed the luxury of no significant injuries to any of their six blueliners.
The six-foot-one, 195-pound DeMelo is essentially seventh on the Sharks' depth chart on defense as it currently stands. Mid-season addition Roman Polak departed via free agency, but the Sharks signed free agent David Schlemko to a four-year contract on July 1.
The Sharks have two remaining restricted free agents left to sign: forward Matt Nieto, and Ryan Carpenter, primarily a minor leaguer.

San Jose also announced it has signed defenseman Dan Kelly, a 27-year-old that collected 15 points (4g, 11a) in 55 games with Albany of the AHL last season. He played for Sharks coaches Pete DeBoer and Steve Spott in Kitchener (OHL) in 2008.
