Team USA Survives Big Scare, Holds Off Australia 98-88 in Rio

Dropping gallons of American sweat, Team USA ran its 2016 Olympics record to 3-0 Wednesday by escaping with a 98-88 victory over Australia Wednesday.

This game was closer than the score might indicate.

Carmelo Anthony, with a game-high 31 points, and Kyrie Irving, with 19, led the way, combining for 26 of 28 U.S. points in the fourth quarter to hold off a fearless and determined group of Australians led by Saint Mary's College product Patty Mills and former Warriors center Andrew Bogut.

Aussies led by as much as eight in the first quarter and by five at the half. Team USA, which allowed 54 first-half points, picked up its defense, giving up only 34 in the second half.

How the Warriors fared:

Kevin Durant: Starting at forward, he totaled 14 points (4-of-16 shooting, 2-of-4 from 3-point distance), five rebounds, one assist and two turnovers in 34 minutes. He made two free throws in the final seconds to close out the scoring.

Draymond Green: Coming off the bench, he totaled 7 points (2-of-5 shooting), two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 13 minutes.

Klay Thompson: Also coming off the bench, he totaled 6 points (2-of-9 shooting, 2-of-6 from deep), four rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes.

Mills led Australia with 30 points, while Bogut put in 15. Matthew Dellevedova, another Saint Mary's product, finished with 11 points and 11 assists.

Team USA, which opened play last Saturday with a 119-62 win over China before posting a 113-69 victory over Venezuela on Monday, returns to action Friday (3 p.m. PT) against Serbia.
