This New Kevin Durant-Steph Curry ‘MVP' Take Might Be Worst One Yet

Programming note: Watch the pregame edition of Warriors Outsiders on Saturday afternoon at 4:30, streaming live on the MyTeams app.

Kevin Durant sustained a strained right calf late in the third quarter of the Warriors' Game 5 matchup with the Rockets in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Without KD, Golden State outlasted Houston in the fourth quarter, then won Game 6 in Texas and beat the Blazers by 22 points in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

In Game 2, the Warriors overcame a 17-point second half deficit and stormed back to take a two-games-to-none lead.

On Friday morning's edition of ESPN's show Get Up!, Mike Greenberg asked Jay Williams what he thinks Durant was thinking as Golden State found a way to win Thursday night.

And folks, Williams offered up as bad a take as you could possibly imagine.

"Well obviously he wants his team to win, but I saw something last night -- and I'm not speaking for him -- but for me, it kind of bothered me. Stephen Curry was on the free throw line (late in the third quarter) and granted Steph is an incredible player, he's MVP-caliber, two-time MVP. Take a listen to what the fans were cheering..."

The show then cut to a clip of the Oracle Arena crowd chanting "M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!"

And that bothered Williams?

"It's like, 'OK, could this ever really be my team?'" Williams answered. "I feel like if you're a basketball player, you know that's Kevin Durant's team. But from the outside looking in, fans still see it as Stephen's team. And I don't care what anybody says, that has to sit with you in some kind of form or capacity.

"He's back-to-back Finals MVP."

Ummmmmmmmmmm ...

... what?!

First of all, the Oracle Arena crowd serenades Durant with "M-V-P" when he's at the free throw line as well.

Secondly, we see fans all over the NBA do this for their best player(s), too. This isn't a new thing by any means.

Warriors fans have been chanting "M-V-P" for Curry for five plus years now. Are they literally not allowed to do this anymore?

As former Warriors forward Matt Barnes told Williams:

"At the end of the day, these people love their team. But Steph is their guy, Steph is the someone they drafted, Steph helped them get their first championship. KD made them a distinguished dynasty, but no matter what happens this will always be Steph's team.

"KD is the best player in the world -- best player on the team -- but it's Steph team."

To which Greenberg said:

"But that begs the question -- does that inform KD's future? When everyone says, 'Well why would you leave that circumstance?' That's a pretty good reason why he might leave that situation."

No it's not.

The whole argument over "whose team it is" is beyond tired at this point. Curry and Durant love being teammates, they've won championships together and they're trying to do something historic right now.

Some of these comments are just beyond silly.

Have a great Friday!
