Giants Still Interested in Manny Ramirez

While the Dodgers continue their laid back pursuit of the eccentric slugger, Manny Ramirez, the Giants aren't closing any doors. In fact, they are still

discussing things

exchanging phone messages with Manny's agent, Scott Boras. It's a tenuous situation, because the Giants are set to have their highest payroll in franchise history. On the flip-side, their lineup could really use his bat. In fact, they'd probably be the front-runners in the NL West with him.

Not that Giants fans should start getting their hopes up, though, because even the Giants president, Larry Baer, seems to believe Manny's destined to remain a Dodger.

"You have to if you have any degree of grounding in reality," Baer said. "He was successful there last year and they have expressed a strong interest for him to return from top to bottom. The gravity may dictate that's where he could end up."

Baer also goes to great lengths to dispel any other rumors of him having secret dalliance-like dinners with Boras, in addition to stating there have been no formal offers to or requests from Boras.

On the other hand, if the Giants are sneaking up on the Dodgers to land a coup, why would Baer tell us everything he knows? Obviously, there's something to the conversations, otherwise why continue to have dialogue with Boras on the subject? Why hasn't Manny just given in an accepted the Dodgers third offer?

Stay tuned, because this isn't over until Manny signs with someone. This has the making of something that could intensify the Giants-Dodgers rivalry even further, if that's possible.
