SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants likely have lost two key relievers for the year, and it's unclear if either one will pitch for them next year.
The team announced Monday that left-hander Tony Watson has a small fracture in his left wrist and will be immobilized for 10 days. Given where the team is in the season, Watson, who can opt out of his contract after the season, has almost certainly made his last appearance of 2019.
The greater concern is with Reyes Moronta, who will have his right labrum and shoulder capsule repaired during a surgical procedure in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Giants did not have an immediate timetable, but Moronta's 2020 season is very much in doubt.
The procedure will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who repaired Hyun-Jin Ryu's torn labrum in May of 2015. The Dodgers' left-hander is a Cy Young candidate this season, but he made only one appearance in 2016 after recovering from the shoulder injury. Julio Urias of the Dodgers had shoulder surgery in June of 2017 and did not return to a mound until the following September.
Moronta's injury happened on one pitch on the last homestand. Watson was hurt making a defensive play in St. Louis. Assuming Watson does not return, they would join Trevor Gott (elbow) as Giants relievers who suffered season-ending injuries. Watson, Moronta and Gott are three of the four Giants pitchers to make 50 appearances this season.
