Giants Place Johnny Cueto on DL With Elbow Inflammation

SAN FRANCISCO -- On a day when one of their aces was cleared to begin playing catch, the Giants lost the other one.

Johnny Cueto was placed on the 10-day disabled list before Tuesday's game with right elbow inflammation. The Giants did not have any further information right away, as the move was announced 90 minutes after Bruce Bochy's pre-game media session. During that session, Bochy said Madison Bumgarner would start playing catch this weekend, but he's still at least a month away, and now has some unfortunate company.

Cueto was off to the best start of his career. He leads the majors with a 0.84 ERA in five starts, and showed no ill effects after missing one start with an ankle sprain. Cueto has in recent days worn a sleeve on his pitching elbow, but he showed no signs of discomfort or diminished stuff on the mound.

Cueto's roster spot was taken by Andrew Suarez, who will start Tuesday night. Suarez was in the rotation because the Giants had a doubleheader Saturday and needed a spot starter, but he now appears headed for an extended cameo.
