Giants Reliever Reyes Moronta Suffers Acute Right Shoulder Strain

It's one of the worst sights you can see on a baseball field.

Giants reliever Reyes Moronta injured his right arm on a pitch to Luis Urias in the top of the sixth inning on Saturday night against the Padres.

Moronta crumpled to the ground and stayed down for several minutes before being escorted to the clubhouse by Giants trainers.

After the Giants' 4-1 loss to the Padres, manager Bruce Bochy announced that Moronta suffered an acute right shoulder strain and will undergo an MRI on Sunday.

Bochy tempered fears that Moronta blew out his right elbow.

"No, no, it's the shoulder," Bochy told reporters at Oracle Park after the game.

Rookie Tyler Rogers replaced Moronta and walked Urias.

Moronta has become one of Bochy's most reliable relievers over the last two seasons. This year, the 26-year-old has a 2.86 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings over 55 appearances.

"Tough break for Reyes," Bochy said. "He's one of our guys. He's going to be down for a while."

It sounds as if Bochy expects Moronta to miss significant time.

"He's a guy we're going to miss in the bullpen," Bochy said.
