Giants Shut Out by Padres, Drop Series

SAN DIEGO — With Buster Posey still sidelined, a lineup full of struggling hitters, and a lefty on the mound for the Padres, Bruce Bochy seriously mixed it up Wednesday. Gorkys Hernandez, who doesn’t have a homer, hit third for the first time in his big league career. Pablo Sandoval played first for the first time since injuring himself while doing the splits at the base in 2012.

It was an odd-looking lineup. It also didn’t work.

Travis Wood, San Diego's starting pitcher, hit a solo shot in the third and that was all the Padres needed. They kept tacking on, winning 5-0 and taking the series.

The Giants dropped five of six on the trip and scored just 10 runs. You've made it this far, so here are five more things to know ...

--- Wood was tough on the Giants as a Cubs reliever, but they wore him down Wednesday. Wood was pulled with one out in the fifth, having thrown 97 pitches. Kelby Tomlinson did most of the damage. Hitting second, Tomlinson saw 24 pitches while drawing two walks and picking up a single off Wood. The Giants couldn't take advantage, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

--- Craig Stammen replaced Wood and blooped a single off Joe Panik’s glove in right field, giving the night’s pitchers a fourth hit. Ty Blach had a pair. Giants pitchers have three multi-hit games this season. Blach, who singled and doubled in his first two at-bats, has done it twice. Madison Bumgarner did it on opening day, of course.

--- Blach was charged with three earned in 5 2/3 innings. After a run of five consecutive starts of at least seven innings, he has thrown 22 total innings over his past four starts, allowing 19 earned runs. With Johnny Cueto set to return, perhaps he’s the pitcher headed for the bullpen.

--- Kyle Crick has been pitching well, but he had a rough one, with his occasional lack of command showing. Crick entered with a runner on second and two outs in the sixth. After a walk, two singles and a wild pitch, the Padres had tacked on two additional runs.

--- They did not serve chicken wings in the press box.
