Injured Giants Pitcher Steadily Improving

Pitcher Joe Martinez recovering after being hit in the head by a line drive.

There is some good news for Giants pitcher Joe Martinez after being hit in the head by a line drive nearly a week ago.  He is out of the hospital and resting at home.  Even better news, he might be back at AT&T Park on Friday when the team opens up a five game homestand.

Martinez was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Milwaukee's Mike Cameron in last Thursday's win.  Martinez dropped to his knees and his forehead immediately started to bleed.

The players, coaches and thousands of fans were silenced -- as Martinez was helped off the field by a Giants trainer.

The 26 year-old Martinez, appearing in his second Major League game, was taken to San Francisco's St. Francis Hospital.

Martinez suffered a concussion and three small fractures in his head.

The rookie reliever was stable and alert in a San Francisco hospital last Friday, and the Giants said he was expected to make a full recovery.

The Giants put Martinez on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of right-hander Justin Miller from the minors following the incident.
