Injury Report: 49ers Cornerback Ward Cleared for Limited Practice

SANTA CLARA – Cornerback Jimmie Ward returned to limited practice on Thursday and, barring a setback, appears to be on pace to be available for the 49ers’ game against the Miami Dolphins.

Ward sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ 30-17 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. He must pass the NFL’s return-to-play protocol to become eligible to return to practice.

Ward must remain symptom-free while adding contact to his football activities in order to be cleared to play in Sunday’s game.

Coach Chip Kelly earlier this week said Ward is the 49ers’ best cornerback due to his versatility. Ward was selected in the first round of the 2014 draft as a safety but has found a home this season as a cornerback.

“We think Jimmie is our best corner,” Kelly said. “He’s our best corner and our best nickel. The ability to cover man-to-man in this league is first and foremost.

“So if you ask anybody what do you want in the secondary? Everybody wants a corner before they want a safety. We think that’s Jimmie’s best position.”
