Jared Leaf, San Jose State Football Player, Upgraded to Serious Condition After Escaping Apartment Fire

The San Jose State football player critically burned in an apartment fire last week is recovering after his first surgery.

Twenty-year-old Spartans linebacker Jared Leaf suffered second-degree burns on his back and arms as he ran through his apartment near the SJSU campus on East Williams Street.

Leaf’s condition has been upgraded to serious, according to a Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System spokesperson.

His family members say on Facebook that he may undergo several more surgeries before he is released from the hospital.

Leaf transferred to San Jose State from the University of Hawaii before last season. Before that, he graduated from Alhambra High School in Martinez, where he was a standout athlete.

Leaf's family has set up a PayPal account for those wishing to help with medical bills. Questions about the fund can be submitted to teamleaf11@gmail.com.
