NAPA – Raiders safety Keith McGill suffered a foot injury in Saturday's practice and will see a specialist to determine the next course of action, according to a league source.
Surgery is a realistic possibility for a player counted on for defensive depth and leadership on special teams. Losing him for a prolonged length of time would be a setback in both of those areas.
McGill was seen on crutches leaving the team's training camp locker room following the injury sustained during a practice without pads. McGill, typically a second-unit player, was running with the first team when it happened.
The fourth-year veteran struggled to find a home on defense, moving from cornerback to safety. He has stood out on special teams, especially in coverage.
The Raiders are already light at safety, with second-round pick Obi Melifonwu sidelined the last few days with an undisclosed injury.
