Bay Area athletes, teams react to Chauvin's guilty verdict originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts Tuesday, including two counts of murder, in the death of George Floyd.
Floyd, a Black man, was killed when Chauvin, then a Minneapolis police officer, knelt on his neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and laying on the ground.
The disgraced police officer could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, while third-degree murder carries a maximum of 25. Second-degree manslaughter is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Chauvin will be sentenced in eight weeks.

After the verdict was read aloud Tuesday, athletes and teams from across the Bay Area and Northern California reacted to the news that Chauvin has been found guilty of all three charges.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, who will play the Kings on Tuesday night, released the following statement.
The NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and WNBA also released statements calling to continue the march toward equality.
Floyd's murder, which was captured on video by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, touched off protests against racial injustice and police brutality around the world last May.
