NFL Rumors: 49ers' Richard Sherman Is Going on IR With Calf Strain

Report: 49ers' Sherman is going on IR with calf strain originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The injury news keeps getting worse for the 49ers.

Richard Sherman will be placed on injured reserve on Wednesday with an apparent leg injury, NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported. He will miss at least the next three games.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport later reported Sherman is dealing with a calf strain and just needs rest and rehab the next few weeks.

Sherman was not dealing with a known injury. The news seems to have come out of left field, and the 49ers now will be without a future Hall of Fame cornerback.

It's likely Emmanuel Moseley and Ahkello Witherspoon are the 49ers' starting cornerbacks Sunday against the New York Jets. Dontae Johnson could be called up from the practice squad to serve as a backup, and Jason Verrett did not practice last week due to a hamstring injury.

The 49ers will be without Sherman for at least games against the Jets, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. San Francisco is in dire need of a win Sunday on the road after dropping its season opener to the Arizona Cardinals. The next few weeks, at the very least, just got much harder with Sherman on the shelf.

Sherman, 32, is in the final season of his three-year contract with the 49ers. He had three interceptions and 11 passes defensed last season on his way to being named to the Pro Bowl and Second Team All-Pro.
