Richard Sherman Says 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo Has Already Shown What He Can Do

Sherman says 49ers' Garoppolo has already shown what he can do originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Richard Sherman is of the opinion the 49ers have no need to go out searching for a quarterback who can take the team to a Super Bowl.

That’s because they already have that guy, as Jimmy Garoppolo proved last season.

“He’s done it, so it’s not like he needs to do something entirely different from what he’s done,” Sherman said in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area to promote Jack in the Box’s “Super-Jack’d Monday” meals.

“He’s already done what he needs to do to get that done.”

The only time Garoppolo has started more than six games in a season, he was the quarterback of the 49ers’ Super Bowl team.

The 49ers won the NFC West, earned home-field advantage in the playoffs, rolled through the playoffs and held a 10-point fourth-quarter lead on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. The Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points in a five-minute span for a 31-20 victory.

Coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have given Garoppolo votes of confidence, but that has not stopped the speculation that the 49ers could look to make a change at quarterback this offseason.

“I think people kind of lose perspective and lose sight with that what-have-you-done-for-me-lately kind of deal,” Sherman said. “But he’s done a ton and he just had some unfortunate injury luck, which happens in this game. And that has slowed down his progress.”

Garoppolo sustained a torn ACL in the third game of the 2018 season. In 2020, he was healthy for only one of the six games in which he played due to two separate high-ankle sprains.

“I think he already has the tools,” Sherman said. “He already has the resume of putting that on tape and leading his team to the Super Bowl and I think once he’s healthy he’ll continue to do that. He’ll continue to do what he was already doing.”
