New Security Procedures at Oakland A's Games Begin

The Oakland Athletics will begin using a walk-through metal detector for fans entering the Coliseum for all remaining home games and any potential playoff games beginning tonight.

The changes come after a new Major League Baseball league-wide recommendation, A's officials said.

Under the new security rules, MLB teams headed to the post season are encouraged to implement a similar league-wide system that is currently in place for all NFL and NBA teams.

Ticket holders entering the coliseum will undergo checks similar to airport security. Fans will have their bags searched and will need to empty pockets of keys, cell phones and other items before walking through a metal detector.

Fans are also encouraged to enter Coliseum when stadium gates first open to allow enough time for the new security procedure. Officials said gates open at 5:35 p.m. Thursday, 4:30 p.m. Friday and 11:05 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Thursday's A's game is against the Minnesota Twins and is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

This new security will not be seen at Giants games.
