ALAMEDA – Maurice Hurst returned to practice Friday in a limited capacity, and could be ready in time to play Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Raiders best defensive rookie would be a real asset if he can overcome an ankle issue, but was formally designated as questionable Friday on the team's official injury report.
So was receiver Martavis Bryant (knee) despite not practicing at all for two straight weeks.
Head coach Jon Gruden said Bryant has gotten a little work in, however, in preparation for a return to play.
Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson said he needs more from Bryant upon return.
"His attitude has been good. It's just the reliability aspect," Olson said. "He's been injured. There have been different reasons why he's had to miss some games. For us, it's more about accountability, reliability for a player like that. We still think he has tremendous skills, just more on a consistent basis."
Cornerback Daryl Worley (shoulder) and edge rusher Arden Key (ankle) are also questionable.
That was the term Gruden used to describe Justin Ellis' chance of playing Sunday, though he doesn't get an official injury status while practicing as a roster exemption after being designation to return off injured reserve. The defensive tackle injured his foot in the season opener.
"I want to see how he feels," Gruden said. "He's been out for about three months. We'll get a true idea of where he is after we talk shortly, but I would say he's questionable right now."
Gruden also said new tight end Darren Waller won't be active after signing him earlier in the week off Baltimore's practice squad.
"I really have a lot of enthusiasm about him," Gruden said. "He's a great kid. He's been through a lot in his young life. I remember him coming out of Georgia Tech as a big wide out. Broadcast a game, he caught a touchdown pass against the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. He's gotten bigger. He's gotten stronger. I know he's been well trained by the people in Baltimore. You get a 255-pound young prospect that has speed and versatility, we'll see where he is. Hopefully we can get him up to speed here quickly."
