Raiders Sign ‘Last Chance U' Star After Rookie Minicamp Tryout

Ronald Ollie earned a tryout with the Raiders and made the most of his opportunity. The former Nicholls State defensive tackle stood out during a three-day Raiders rookie minicamp and earned an undrafted free agent contract, he announced on Monday morning

He will fight for a roster spot during the offseason program and training camp, trying to realize a dream.

Ollie will be recognizable to those who watched the Netflix documentary series "Last Chance U," which spent several seasons featuring the powerhouse East Mississippi Community College football program. Ollie was a star of the series' first season and chronicled the trials of playing junior college football in a new town. His life before and after his time on the show is well chronicled here by Sports Illustrated.

The show followed Ollie's experience, among others, as he eventually accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Nicholls State.

He took another step toward his NFL goals by signing up with the Raiders.

The Raiders will shuffle the roster some this week as tryout players earn spots, and others are released to make room for them. The Raiders conducted a three-day rookie minicamp starting Friday. New pros will join veteran teammates henceforth in the team's offseason program, which entered Phase II last week. That allows players and coaches to conduct on-field work, though no helmets or offense vs. defense work is allowed.

The Raiders also signed former North Carolina State punter A.J. Cole to a free agent deal after working with him last weekend on a tryout basis. He will compete with 2018 fifth-round pick Johnny Townsend for the punting job.
