Samardzija Shreds Reds Over Eight Innings, Giants Win 3-1

Entering Tuesday's game, Jeff Samardzija didn't have a good track record at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

But that didn't matter on this night as Samardzija gave up just one run over eight dominant innings to lead the Giants to a 3-1 win over the Reds.

With the scored tied 1-1 through seven, it looked like Samardzija may have gotten a hard-luck no decision. But the Giants offense pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth, giving their starter a chance at the win.

After a one-out walk to Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt singled to left, getting Pence to third. But Belt was thrown out attempting to advance to second. The Reds then walked Brandon Crawford intentionally. Kelby Tomlinson made them pay with an infield single to shortstop, scoring Pence. Gregor Blanco followed with a single right to plate Crawford.

In 11 career appearances at Great American Ballpark, Samardzija had a 5.40 ERA. He exorcised those demons Tuesday. His final line: 8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 115 pitches. He now has a 3.32 ERA on the season.

Buster Posey continued his recent hot streak with three doubles in five plate appearances. It was his second career three-double game.

The Reds only came on a solo home run by former Giants prospect Adam Duvall, his third of the season.
