School Raises Funds to Bring Rival to B-Ball Tourney

With a reputation as a basketball powerhouse, it's not surprising that Oakland's McClymonds High is heading for the state championships in Sacramento.

What is surprising is the more than $1,000 in donations they were given from players and parents at Danville's Monte Vista High School to make the trip -- the same team they beat to get to the championships.

Players and parents at Danville's Monte Vista High School pitched in when they found out McClymonds didn't have money to pay for food and lodging. That's after McClymonds squelched Monte Vista's championship hopes with a win Saturday.

Without the money, the team was facing the prospect of a long bus trip the day of the game.

In a final twist to the story, Oakland school officials announced Thursday they will pay for McClymonds' trip after all. The donations will be returned.
