After winning five medals earlier in the day, the United States swimming team was back at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre for more qualifying heats.
First up was the women’s 800m freestyle. Coming in first was, guess who, Katie Ledecky. While she didn’t sniff her Olympic record she set in 2016, Ledecky finished with a time of 8:15.67. Ledecky was coming off her silver medal in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.
Fellow American Katie Grimes had the second-best time of the qualifying heats with a 8:17.05. Both will compete in the semifinals of the event on Friday.

Caeleb Dressel, fresh off the men's 100m freestyle gold medal win from earlier in the day, continued to pave the way in the pool. He tied the Olympic record in the men’s 100m butterfly, swimming it in 50.39.
Tim Shields also qualified for the semifinals of the event, ending with the 12-fastest time at 51.57. Those semifinals also will be happening on Friday.
Two Americans swimmers advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 200m backstroke. Rhyan White and Phoebe Bacon placed second and fourth respectively during the morning heats of the event. White finished jst 0.05 seconds behind Australia’s Kaylee McKeown with a time of 2:08.23. She shared that time with Canadian Kylie Masse.
Bacon’s fourth place finish was just 0.07 seconds behind White and Masse, ending at 2:08.30. White and Bacon will be looking to dethrone McKeown, who is the favorite in the event.
Wrapping up the heats was the mixed 4x100m medley relay. Regan Smith, Abbey Weitzeil, Andrew Wilson and Tom Shields were the four participants for the U.S. Shields and Weitzeil led the team to a second-place finish behind Great Britain, concluding the event with a time of 3:41.02. The team will compete in the finals of the relay event on Friday.
