The Dominican Republic's women's volleyball team earned its first victory at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, downing Kenya's endearingly indefatigable squad in a battle of previously winless teams in Pool A play at Ariake Arena.
The Dominicans grabbed the early advantage with a 25-19 triumph in the first set, and by the time its 25-18 win in the second set was in the books, the outcome appeared inevitable.
It was. Kenya's palpable and infectious enthusiasm never quite faded, but the D.R. was at its most dominant in the third set. With a 25-10 closeout, it improved to 1-3 in pool play. Kenya fell to 0-4.

Turkey keeps Argentina winless
Argentina has yet to win a set in Tokyo, and Turkey kept it that way in the fourth match of Pool B play.
After getting swept by the U.S., the ROC and Italy, Argentina had a shot at getting a set victory under its belt but failed to successfully block Eda Erdem's set-point spike. Turkey carried the momentum into the next two sets to clinch the 3-0 win, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18.
The victory punches Turkey's ticket to the quarterfinals for the first time in the nation's history.
Brazil remains undefeated by downing Serbia
The top two teams in Pool A finally squared off, as Brazil and Serbia both put their perfect records on the line.
Serbia seemed to have the advantage coming in, entering the match with three shut-out wins to Brazil's two, but the team dropped the first two sets and failed to force a fifth.
The Brazilians, whose only challenge so far came in a 3-2 win over the Dominican Republic, wasted no time in getting the upper hand. They coasted through the first two sets and squashed any comeback aspirations Serbia had in the fourth to stay unbeaten, finishing the game 25-20, 25-16, 23-15, 25-19.
Despite the loss, Serbia's Tijana Boskovic recorded an impressive stat line, including 32 points, 30 attacks, one block and one serve.
South Korea edges Japan
In an intense match that came down to the final set, South Korea narrowly edged out Japan to improve to 3-1 against Pool A opponents.
South Korea took an early lead with a 25-19 victory in Set 1, but Japan responded by winning Set 2 by the same exact score. South Korea took Set 3 while Japan fought back in Set 4. With the game on the line, South Korea scored four unanswered points to clinch the win, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 16-14.
Park Jeong-Ah accounted for three of the final four points, and Kim Yeon-Koung led with 30 total points.
China bounced, but defeats Italy
Turkey's win eliminated China, who finally won its first match at the Games later in the day with a straight sets victory over Pool B leaders Italy.
With injured captain Zhu Ting sitting out, China won 25-21, 25-20, 26-24.
An emotional China coach Lang Ping apologized to the fans, saying: "It was unexpected that we could not advance to the quarter-final stage and I have to say that is my responsibility as head coach."
