Torres, DeRosa Return in 1-0 Win; Tejada, Burrell Benched

We mentioned earlier that Andres Torres and Mark DeRosa were coming off the disabled list on Tuesday, creating a whole pile of interesting lineup and roster situations for Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean to manage.

They were both on the field and in the lineup for Tuesday night's 1-0 win against the Diamondbacks.

The two biggest losers in the Giants decision to activate Torres and DeRosa are Emmanuel Burriss and Ryan Rohlinger, who were both optioned to Triple-A Fresno.

Torres returned to center and batted lead-off (1-3 with a walk), despite some speculation that he might end up playing left or right field until he was completely ready to roam the gaping center section of AT&T Park.

And DeRosa headed to  ... third base (0-3 with a strikeout).

This is only surprising because, well, Miguel Tejada is highly-paid, though not entirely productive at third. Tejada's been on the hot corner since Pablo Sandoval's injury, which made room for Mike Fontenot to turn into a shocker of a hitter at shortstop (though 0-4 on Tuesday).

Speaking of the Panda, he's getting closer and closer to a return.

"I start taking groundballs today. I'm happy," Sandoval tweeted Tuesday.

The downside to that news is that Sandoval is only doing so with a cast on his hand, which this photo from CSN Bay Area's Jaymee Sire confirms.

But while he's gone, someone's gotta man third. And word on the street, per Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury-News, is that the gig is DeRosa's to "take and run with" until Panda returns.

"I know I'm the forgotten man, but I haven't forgotten about myself," DeRosa said, per Amy Guitierrez of CSN Bay Area.

This is kind of fascinating because it simultaneously shows a) how little Bochy/Sabean trust their incumbent shortstop (Tejada) and b) how willing they are to ride with less "famous" commodities on offense. (That's for those of you wondering if Sabean is trying to smokescreen about trading for Jose Reyes.)

In other words, if Mike Fontenot and DeRosa can keep the ship afloat until Sandoval returns, then there might just be enough offense hanging around the clubhouse to keep the Giants' front office from feeling the need to deal a prospect.

They certainly won't need to trade for any outfielders: suddenly there's a big, old crowd with Torres, Burrell, Aaron Rowand (starting in left Tuesday), Cody Ross (starting in right) and Nate Schierholtz and Darren Ford.

Ford will get to run only in the most literal sense -- when the team needs a pinch runner. Schierholtz will likely keep being a defensive replacement for Burrell and Burrell/Rowand/Ross will probably all rotate based on who's got the hot hand at the plate.

If Bochy can do the same work he did in 2010, that should probably work out just fine for the team.
