East Bay School Official Warns Colleagues of Social Media

Twitter, blogs no place for school officials, East Bay school board member says.

Stay off of Twitter, don't comment on blogs.

The instructions of Mt. Diablo school district official Linda Mayo are clear, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Several members of the school board in the East Bay district use Twitter to communicate with the press and with the public, according to the newspaper. One, Brian Lawrence, started a blog and "comment[s] regularly" on an education reporter's blog, answering questions from the public.

But Linda Mayo, who has sat on the board for 15 years, told colleagues on Dec. 21 that "trust is a five-letter word with a profound meaning," and went on to say that trust does not include "discussing out of context your actions as trustees with the press or through social media outside of your presence," the newspaper reported.

Others called Mayo's position "bizarre," the newspaper reported. Lawrence has yet to stop tweeting or commenting on blogs.
